Why do I need a buffered IDE interface?

Many companies have been advertising their range of buffered IDE interfaces lately and warning of the danger from using the standard unbuffered A1200 IDE system. The buffered interface protects the IDE interface from damage that could be bought about by connecting too many devices or attaching cables that are too long. In general, you only really need a buffered interface if you have more than two IDE devices connected to your A1200. Other Amiga systems, such as the A4000 already contain a buffered interface built-in. There are a number of buffered interfaces available, such as the EZ-IDE from Eyetech. ATAPI Software for the devices can be found on Aminet or, in some circumstances, included with the interface.
