What is a FPU?

An FPU, short for Floating Point Unit, is an extra processor on most modern processors that allows complex mathematical operations to be performed using hardware. These are used extensively for rendering software and Doom-style games allowing fast 3D worlds to be generated quickly. Most A1200 68020 and 68030 accelerators, as well as RAM boards have room for an FPU to be added onto the card. The type of FPU can vary as there are two types- PLCC (Plug Leadless Chip Carrier) and PGA (Pin Gate Array). The only difference between the two is the way they are fitted onto the board.
