What are Devices?

Devices are standard driver software used to run certain hard or software. These are usually stored in DEVS: and allow a programmer to access part of the hardware (such as the printer port) without writing any extra code. Devs: also contains a number of subdirectories that store various devices for a specific purpose. Click here to find out more.

Datatypes

Contains various files that allow a program that supports Datatypes too load the Picture, sound or text formats included without having to directly support every format. It can be seem as an object-orientated system that allows any Datatype aware program to load a file that it did not originally support. For example, a program such as Personal Paint would be able to load any new picture format that may be launched without requiring a major rewrite.

DOSDrivers
Contain script files that allow the operating system and other software to access drives not supported in the Rom, such as PC or Apple Macs disks.
Dos drivers that come as standard.

Keymaps
Small files that alter the keyboard configuration to a particular country. It is configured using the "Input" program stored in the Prefs drawer.

Monitors
Driver software that configures the display on your monitor or TV to give the best display. This is controlled using the "Overscan" program in Prefs.

Printers
The directory most people will be familiar with. This contains driver software specifically designed for a printer. The standard Workbench drivers are fairly basic so when possible get a PD or commercial driver (such as TurboPrint) to get the best out of your printer.

Also found in the DEVS: drawer are the following files:

Clipboard.device - Controls access to CLIPS:
Parallel.device - An OS-friendly way of accessing the parallel port.
Printer.device - A device driver for the printer device.
Serial.device - Controls access to the serial port.
MFM.device - Device that controls access to MS-DOS disks using the CrossDOS utility.
System-configuration - A remnant of Workbench 1.3 that contains certain preferences configuration data needed when booting your Amiga. Has been replaced by preferences stored in ENVARC.
Postscript_init.ps - Holds information needed to initialise a PostScript printer when using PrinterPS
